Hey News Media, something juicy happened, feel like doing your job?

A few nights ago while doing my usual facebook stalking I came across an article discussing a recent car crash in Los Angeles. On the night of Oct 16th on the corner of Venice Blvd and Glyndon Ave a girl driving a BMW collided with a police officer, resulting in the death of a Devin (driver of BMW) and hospitalization of both police officers involved. While Devin was making a right turn on Venice BLVD she was hit by a police car driving between 50-70 mph without its lights or sirens on.

From a narrow perspective this story seems like easy case to solve, as most would automatically come to the conclusion that the girl was probably driving drunk. Maybe in fact Devin was committing that blasphemous act of, no don’t say it…“texting”. Truth be told I hate generalizing, and in most other situations I would feel somewhat guilty assuming all people thought one way, but all bullshit aside, rarely in police/citizen car accidents are the police ever assumed guilty of any foul play. Well ladies and gentlemen, as of Oct 18th, two days following the car accident, majority opinion seems to driving the usual thoughts with no effort to even consider what actually happened that night.

According to Lt. Paula Kreefft, a watch commander at the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Division, “the accident was not a result of a police pursuit or response to a call for service”. Ok, so Devin wasn’t speeding or being pulled, so according to all accounts including LAPD, Devin was not performing any actions requiring police attention. Also, it would be reasonable to assume that police officers who are just patrolling town and are not on a call somewhere, should be following all normal traffic rules. So someone please enlighten me as to why police officers need to be driving at criminal speeds for no apparent reason and not even alert the public of their speeds with their lights that they so conveniently seem to enjoy when performing their loveable ticket issuances. Please do yourself a favor and read the comments of the case, the links provided below it will blow your mind as to why this is not a bigger issue or even properly reported. Since your attention span is probably slipping right now I am going to get into my biggest qualm with this story, where in god’s name has the media been.

Listen I love balloon boy as much as the next person, but an innocent women died two days ago because police officers chose to act against the law to which they are paid to enforce, and decided to drive at criminal speeds and absolutely abuse the power we entrust in them. Among the horrific facts surrounding this case, some include; 1. Misreporting about times that accident occurred (police record indicates accident occurred at 12:30, witnesses vouch it occurred around 11:45), 2.15 minute wait time for an ambulance to show up (2 different fire stations located within 6 blocks of accident), 3. False reporting about accident (article stating Devin ran a red light when there are no light at the intersection), 4. Witness reports were not taken (witnesses of accident were told to leave the scene or they would be arrested for “interfering with a crime scene”). The list really does goes on, but I mean from all the crap the news does report on, here are four issues they could spend countless hours on.

Pardon my French, but what the fuck happened to journalism and actually seeking and reporting facts. I don’t want to draw into all nuances surrounding the media and their pathetic and insulting approach to what they attempt to label unbiased journalism, but is this a matter of pure negligence or rather protecting a government institution entrusted to enforce laws. For all my intentions, the answer lies in the latter. It’s seems rather fishy how networks vie for the opportunity to find dirt on any politician or publicly debated issue but tend to avoid more unspoken issues such as police abusing their power. Their interests seems more focused on alerting the public on Jon and Kate’s new divorce negotiations rather than discussing essential societal issues. I ask you CNN, FOX, MSNBC, during the weekend of this accident you were on for a total of 144 hours and spent 50% of that airtime devoted to a man accused of pretending to putt his son into a balloon which flew away. This is pathetic and if this article does anything I hope it somehow encourages dialogue on this issue which can pressure the media to “grow a pair” finally.

I in no way wrote enough to completely clarify my full thoughts on the issue but I hope that on my posts to follow I will have more available information to describe Devin’s story and the legal battle which will probably follow. I have listed the sites of the few sources that were available to read what occurred. I urge to tell people about Devin’s story and post/send the story’s links to your friends to force the media to address this issue.
